I-Wei Chen

I-Wei Chen (BS-Physics-1972, Tsinghua; MS-Physics-1975, Penn; PhD-Metallurgy-1980, MIT) is Skirkanich Professor of Materials Innovation at University of Pennsylvania. He also taught at University of Michigan (Materials, 1986-1997) and MIT (Nuclear Engineering; Materials, 1980-1986). His oxide and nitride research covered nano crystal transformations, transformation plasticity, superplasticity, fatigue, grain growth and sintering. His current interest is in biomedical nanoparticles, nanograin ferroelectrics, resistance memory devices and fuel cell stability. A Fellow of American Ceramic Society (1991) and recipient of its Ross Coffin Purdy Award (1994), Edward C. Henry Award (1999) and Sosman Award (2006), he authored over 90 papers in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society. He received Humboldt Award for Senior U.S. Scientists (1997) and was a Chong-Kong Professor of Tsinghua University in Beijing (2006-2009).
